This Master’s Program goes beyond technical training to educate professionals capable of critical reasoning, informed decision-making, and effective expert testimony within judicial contexts.
The Program integrates laboratory practice and academic instruction, scientific methodology and legal reasoning, technological innovation and logical analysis. Its curriculum is specifically designed to provide competencies aligned with the concrete needs of public prosecutors, courts, law enforcement agencies, and forensic laboratories.
Above all, the Master’s Program represents a professional and academic community that brings together students, faculty members, researchers, consultants, and practitioners, united by a shared commitment to advancing quality, methodological rigor, and innovation in forensic science in Italy.
It is an environment in which the competencies of new generations are systematically developed, while the expertise of experienced professionals is continuously refined and updated.
Forensic genetics is currently undergoing a profound transformation, evolving from a predominantly technical discipline into a highly interdisciplinary field that interfaces with law, digital technologies, neuroscience, optics, artificial intelligence, and the behavioral sciences. This Master’s Program is designed to educate professionals who not only understand these developments, but are also capable of critically governing and responsibly applying them in real-world forensic and judicial contexts.
In forensic genetics, continuing education is not merely a professional requirement; it represents an ethical obligation. A failure to remain scientifically and methodologically up to date risks detachment from current practice and, in the most critical cases, may compromise the reliability of forensic expertise and the administration of justice.
For these reasons, the Program does not simply deliver instruction: it actively engages participants, challenges established perspectives, and fosters professional and intellectual transformation.
For a long time, scientific education has been based on a unidirectional model in which knowledge was transmitted from instructor to student through passive learning. In the context of contemporary higher education, this approach is no longer sufficient.
New generations of learners accustomed to digital environments, interactivity, and complexity, require educational models that go beyond the mere transmission of concepts. Effective training today must promote active participation, critical engagement, and experiential learning, enabling students to internalize knowledge through practice, interaction, and problem-solving.
We have therefore completely rethought how to train a forensic geneticist, introducing:
From this year, a new element enriches the program:
“Meet the Expert”, a series of meetings with leading national and international experts.
Not just lectures, but a space where teachers’ experience, real cases, difficult decisions, mistakes, and insights become living material for discussion.
A unique opportunity not only for trainees but also for experts wishing to engage with innovations, test new approaches, and improve their practice.
The Master’s program integrates all aspects of forensic genetics but goes beyond DNA.
In addition to DNA, forensic statistics, and evidence interpretation, students encounter:
》 Forensic geology
》 Fingerprint analysis
》 Anthropology
》 Blood pattern analysis
》 Neuroscience
》 Artificial intelligence and probabilistic genotyping
》 Crime scene investigation techniques
》 Emotional communication and courtroom testimony
》 Ballistics
》 Biostatistics
A comprehensive skill set designed to train professionals who are aware, complete, versatile, and ready for the real world.
Forensic Genetics Lab Experience
Real-case simulations: from evidence to profile, from interpretation to technical report.
Forensic Sandbox
A controlled space where making mistakes is part of the learning process.
Cross-contamination Workshops
To truly understand how artifacts or handling errors arise.
Virtual Courtroom AI-driven
A virtual courtroom to practice testimony, cross-examination, and trial dynamics.
Bias Laboratory
To recognize and neutralize cognitive, statistical, and communicative biases.
Forensic Hackathon
Group challenges, complex problems, tight deadlines—just like in the real world.
Scientific Storytelling
Being able to perform is not enough—you must also know how to explain.
The tuition fee for the Master’s program is €4,000, payable in two installments: the first upon enrollment and the second by the deadline indicated in the Call for Applications.
The Call for Applications is available on the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” website under the section “Second-Level Master’s Programs”.
Scholarships and financial aid are available as described in the Call
The Master’s program in Forensic Genetics has limited enrollment: a maximum of 60 students per year.
If applications exceed available spots, admission is determined by comparative evaluation of curricula and qualifications by the Master’s Committee, which establishes a ranking list.
Eligible candidates include graduates in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Law, Political Science, and Communication, holding a specialist, master’s, or equivalent degree. Graduates from other disciplines may be admitted upon authorization by the Master’s Committee
